USAPL/IPF Approved Equipment: Things to Look At

The USA Powerlifting (USAPL) is the national affiliate branch of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). The USAPL is the authority that sanctions local, regional, and national IPF events within the United States of America. Given that the USAPL is operating under the IPF it means that the same rules apply for personal apparel. Therefore, any IPF approved knee sleeves will automatically be considered USAPL approved knee sleeves.

Now that we have got all the technicalities out of the way it’s easier to understand that you need to have IPF approved equipment if you want to take part in any Powerlifting Competition. The current IPF list has been updated on 13.04.2021 and will be valid until 31.12.2022. In this article, we are going to go over all the brands that manufacture the allowed equipped and the IPF & USAPL specifications.

USAPL Approved Belts

Weightlifting belts have been gaining popularity lately and the odds of spotting an IPF weightlifter without a belt are slim to none. Belts are the best tool to increase your stability during a lift because they apply intra-abdominal and thoracic sustained pressure. IPF allows weightlifters to choose from an extensive number of belts from various manufacturers.

USAPL & IPF Requirements for Belts

  • The belt must be worn over the lifting suit
  • Leather, vinyl, and non-stretchable materials are allowed
  • You can laminate the belt by using glue or stitches
  • Padding and any other form of support are not allowed
  • No logos are allowed if they are not approved by the IPF
  • Your name and countries logo can be added if approved by the IPF
  • Maximum width 4 inches
  • The inside buckle has to be 11 centimeters, the outside buckle 13 centimeters
  • Maximum tongue loop width 5 centimeters
  • Maximum tongue loop 25 centimeters from where the belt ends
  • Single or double prongs are allowed

Frankly, my favorite one is SBD belt. About a few years ago I used to work with Inzer belt, but this one made huge bruises, because of bloody hard leather.

USAPL & IPF Approved Wrist Wraps

Wrist wraps are used by weightlifters that require additional wrist support during official events or when training. They are great at alleviating pressure from the wrist when heavy lifts are involved. They also offer a better grip and will prevent the barbell from spinning.

USAPL & IPF Requirements for Wrist Wraps

  • A1-ply elastic fabric is the only allowed material
  • Cotton and polyester can be used to cover the wrist wrap
  • Maximum length 1 meter
  • Maximum width 8 centimeters
  • The velcro and sleeves are to be included in the above-mentioned length and width requirements
  • When lifting the tightening loops cannot be over the thumb or finger
  • 12 centimeter wide bandages or sweatbands are allowed
  • If you choose to wear a sweatband you cannot use a wrist wrap and vice versa

At the everyday training routine, there are no strict requirements to the wrist wraps. Also, if you’re training with the weights less than your 2x personal weight, there is no any need to look at the professional and pricey wrist wraps like SBD. Just go to Amazon and look at the popular options, unless you’re going to competition level.

USAPL & IPF Approved Knee Sleeves

Knee sleeves are meant to protect the lifter from injury. Knees are constantly under pressure and any added compression will improve blood flow and help with reducing swelling and pain. They also help with warming up and with maintaining heat in the knee joints. High load squats are almost impossible without the aid of a knee sleeve.

USAPL & IPF Requirements for Knee Sleeves

  • Knee sleeve and wraps cannot be combined
  • 1-ply neoprene is the only allowed material
  • Covering the sleeves can be done with the aid of non-compressive fabric
  • The following materials are not allowed: velcro, straps, and paddings
  • Significant rebound cannot be provided by the knee sleeves
  • Maximum width 7 millimeters
  • Maximum length 30 centimeters
  • There cannot be any holes present in the fabric
  • Once equipped they need to be centered around the knee joint
  • Knee sleeves cannot rub against the suit or the socks

IPL & USAPL Approved Singlets

You probably already know that you can’t show up in street clothes at any IPL or USAPL events. The singlet is the mandatory equipment because judges need to be able to see both your legs and arms to be able to provide accurate scoring. Singles have been shown to improve efficiency when lifting so finding a durable piece is very important. They also greatly improve comfort and that is nothing to scoff at either.

USAPL & IPF Requirements for Singlets

  • The singlet cannot be loose on the body
  • All non-compressive fabrics are allowed
  • The same singlet thickness must be observed all over the body
  • The only exception to the above rule is at the crotch area – a supportive layer that measures 12×24 centimeters is allowed
  • Singlet legs maximum length 25 centimeters
  • Singlet legs minimum length 3 centimeters
  • The singlet can display the name, nation, and manufacturer logo
